Useful information for reference and educational purposes only;

The active ingredient in Hepar sulfuris calcareum, also termed Calcium sulfuratum Hahnemanni.  This is a powder which is formed by mixing and burning equal parts of flowers of sulphur and the white interior of oyster shells.

As a double medicine made of sulphur and calcium, Hepar sulfuris combines the action of the two medications: that of sulphur on the skin and mucous membranes and that of calcium on the glands.
Direction of Action

    to skin, mucous membranes and adnexa
    upper and lower respiratory tracts
    gastrointestinal system
    Renal and urinary system

indicated for;

    purulent inflammations

Cardinal symptoms are an oversensitivity to touch and to pain as well as to cold air, which can be more or less strongly expressed; and a strong tendency to suppurations everywhere.
According to Mezger, the calcium content is modified by the action of the sulphur to a great extent; this then affects the close relationship of Hepar sulfuris to the lymph glands and to the exudative (liquid secreting) processes of the skin and mucous membranes.
Hepar sulfuris is a good remedy against all types of local purulent inflammations and suppurations. The product name was selected because this medicine appears to have a particularly good effect against staphylococci (gram-positive bacteria).
According to Mezger, Hepar sulfuris is in particular indicated when the purulent process still develops in the direction of pus formation and even after the opening, the administration is continued until the surrounding inflammation has abated.
Lachesis, Pyrogenium and Echinacea are also medicines that must be considered by acute septic (leading to blood poisoning) tending suppurations.

Beyond this, Hepar sulfuris is a constitutional medicine for animals that are susceptible for infections, e.g. with recurrent catarrhs or tonsillitis (common in dogs but rare in cats.) Hepar sulfuris is pharmacologically closely related to sulphur (see Dermisal); which, in contrast to Hepar sulfuris, is indicated in dry to moist inflammations
